The performance of many Path of Exile items can be improved by upgrading their performance. They can be a good source of extra damage, more AD or even more attaches.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a kind of upgrade that can be used on armor and weapon items. They increase the stats of whatever item they are connected to. Armor upgrades can be found in the world of the game and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. They can also be salvaged using a professional or higher salvage kits to recover upgrades from the items.

The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it can absorb. The damage absorption of an armor piece will increase when it's upgraded to its maximum upgrade level. It's important to remember that this will increase the weight of the armor, which means it should be heavier.

There are a few different types of armor upgrades available in the game and they all have distinct effects. Some upgrades give armor an extra number of health points while others make it more powerful and lighter. The type of armor upgrade that an item can receive will be indicated by the name of the upgrade as shown in the table below.

Some of the upgrades also require magic or a combination of technology and magic, which are indicated by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table below. Certain upgrades also require fees for use. They are referred to as "Charges" entries in the table. The charges associated with these upgrades change daily or never expire, depending on the upgrade.

It is normal to use more gems for aesthetic reasons. The jewels can also enhance performance and create a harder surface than steel so that repeated friction from pivots do not cause damage to the movement.

Trinkets are pieces of equipment that bestow many small but useful benefits to your hero. They can be acquired starting in the beginning areas as loot or personal story rewards from vendors, and by completing road interactions. They can also be found on the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.

The first trinket a player unlocks will be the cloak, which grants an unimportant but beneficial boost to movement speed and the ability to escape. The player can then acquire necklaces, rings, and amulets in a similar fashion to how they acquired weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment has one upgrade slot that can accommodate either a universal or jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades offer smaller bonuses and can be used in any kind of equipment however, jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded, and is only compatible with specific types of trinkets.

These trinkets provide additional buffs and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't in combat. This allows the hero to perform better when they are not active and also helps fill in the void of a solid team or any talent tree slots that would normally be filled with hero's ideal stats.

As a general rule trinket upgrades should be a priority BiS (Best in Slot) items you won't replace anytime soon. Also, consider items with desirable stats that aren't as significant as the iLevel of the item that is to be upgraded. This is especially true if an item has multiple stats you'd like to upgrade, as it's usually better to upgrade a single important stat rather than two sub-optimal ones.

Jungle players often upgrade their yellow trinket to a red one prior to the start of the game. Top and mid players however will pick a pink or green ward, depending on the game's matchup. These choices will have a significant impact on the hero's ability to control his map.
